I’ve been haunted by the face of my Great Grandmother. I discovered her family photo in one of the rabbit-hole dives into my geneology. There she was, a daughter of Mormon polygamist pioneers, with the stoic stare that everyone has in early photos. But there she also was with my hooded eyelids, and my father’s mouth, and a tomboy-style (as much as you can have in a Victorian dress) that I could identify with...
Then I found a copy of her death certificate. Cause of death: Carcinoma of the breast.
It’s been 11 years since the chemo treatment for my first diagnosis of breast cancer. And 6 years since the surgery for my second breast cancer. Is there a familial, genetic link? Maybe. Maybe not. But I felt a spiritual link. Our lives have been very, very different. But we both had the same horrible day with a doctor breaking the news. We both had the fear of the sinister cells dividing and subdividing under our skin. She lived to 67, but I plan on living a lot longer than that. I decided to add my face to hers. A shared genetic makeup. A shared experience.

I’ve been very inspired by the drawings of Santiago Ramón y Cajal. A neuroanatomist who lived from 1852 to 1934, and is considered the father of modern neuroscience.
His drawings not only brought revelations to the scientific world, they are beautiful and fascinating works of art.

	︎her-story &nbsp;
My Great Grandmother Hannah Christina was the daugher of Anders Jonsson (1834-1912) born in Asmundtorp, Sweden. (Hannah is at the upper right of the photo.) Her father Anders married Ingar Olsson (not shown here), and soon after, they converted to Mormonism. Many Mormon missionaries traveled to Europe to gain enough converts to help them establish a large population in Utah Territory. Ingar’s parents were shocked with the news their 16-year-old daughter had joined a strange religion and was sailing to America. When Anders left the house one day, they came and took Ingar home with them. When officers interceded, she was allowed to go home to her husband.
With a flurry of emotions, Anders &amp; Ingar left for America, bringing with them a friend, Hanna Schwartz (pictured next to Anders), to help them set up household in the New World. After a long voyage by ship, train, and ox-drawn wagons over the Plains and the Rocky Mountains, they settled in a valley north of Salt Lake City. It was a tough new life, living in dugouts, and guarding against (understandably) unhappy native Indians.
As they all settled in to their new life, Andrew embraced polygamy, and took Hanna as a plural wife. Ingar tragically died at the age of 25, leaving Hanna (my GGGrandmother) to take care of Andrew, and her and Ingar’s 8 children, all under 10 years of age.
Hanna’s eldest daughter Hannah Christina, later married my Great Grandfather, Charles John Windley. His family were also Mormon pioneers, immigrating from England.
They lived on a farm in St. Charles, Idaho. Hannah Christina Jenson Windley 1866-1927
Working hard, and planting her new life.

	My artwork began with a DNA test.
Searching for health answers among the genetic variants led me down a fascinating rabbit hole of research. What traits are genetic? What mutations are inheritable? Why do I have so much German DNA?And that research led me down the rabbit hole of geneology. Man, oh man.There I discovered the stories of the people who handed me these genes. Harrowing stories. Amazing stories. Early pioneers from Sweden and England braving wagon trains across the untamed West. Great grandmothers living in earthen dugouts through harsh winters in a new land. Great grandfathers with 9 wives and 45 children. Ancestors alongside George Washington when he crossed the Delaware. And generations of Danish farmers and fishers and housekeepers and blacksmiths descended from Vikings.I became fascinated with the overlap between the ancestry pedigree charts and the genetic karyotype charts. The invisible genomes that were the actual linkages to these early pioneers and Scandinavian immigrants.&nbsp;
At a cellular level, their traits, their diseases, their struggles, and their hopes...are mine.&nbsp;

	&nbsp;a karyotype︎ A karyotype chart is used to tell whether a person has the proper number of chromosomes, 46, arranged in 22 numbered pairs called autosomes. The 23rd pair is the sex chromosome... females have two X chromosomes, and males have and X and a Y.

characters︎

	Most of these chromosomal figures are made using actual photos of my direct ancestors.It was an incredibly fun challenge to tell a visual story about each person, while maintaining the characteristic X-shape of a chromosome.Can I show an occupation? Describe an outfit with just a collar and a cuff? How can I use the negative space between the “legs”? (Much more of a challenge for the female figures.) Turns out it’s a good place for a broom or a fish or 8 wives or a drowned woman.

My GGGG Grandfather
Converted to Mormonism in England. Accidentally drowned a woman while he was baptizing her in a river. Her husband didn’t agree it was an accident, so J. Pugmire landed in jail. After a week, and eyewitness testimony he was released. Thought it might be a good time to leave the country, so he headed to Utah Territory to join the Mormons there.

My GG GrandmotherRaised in Sweden. Her best friend Ingar converted to Mormonism and asked Hannah to accompany her and her new husband to America. Would she please come, join the wagon train to Utah, and help with raising Ingar’s future children? Sure she would! Would she consider becoming Ingar’s husband’s Second Wife? Sure she would! Sadly, Ingar died at 25, and Hannah was left to raise her AND Ingar’s 8 children, all under the age of 10.

When he was just 14 years old, John Windley converted to Mormonism in Loughborough, England. He came to America to be part of the “Saints” trek to Utah Territory and with his new wife Mary, made a honeymoon trip across the West, driving a wagon full of woodstoves. It was a brutal trip, with a very sick wife, and was the beginning of many years of hard work and near starvation, pioneering a new land. He chose to have his photo taken holding his Book of Mormon, so I honored his choice here as well.

My mother and Great Grandfather
I don’t think my mother ever met her grandfather, a hard-working Danish blacksmith. Her parents immigrated to America before she was born. Vivian became a stewardess in the 1940s and used her flight passes to travel across Europe and to visit her Danish cousins, but Anders was not alive at that time. I was happy to give them their only grandfather/granddaughter dance.

My GGGG Grandmother
Persis Goodall married Lorenzo Dow Young, Brigham Young’s brother, when she was 20, and they became Mormons a few years later. Plagued by illness, and many of her children dying prematurely, she was forced to move constantly across the entire country, as the Mormons were driven from place to place, often at the threat of death. Lorenzo’s missionary and pioneering work left her to manage alone for long stretches at a time. And when Lorenzo took his first “plural wife” she separated from him a few years later. It may have not have been the polygamy, but a personal issue with this new wife, as Persis later became “sealed” to a different man as his second polygamous wife.

	On July 24 1847, my GGGG Grandfather Lorenzo Dow Young, alongside his brother Brigham Young and 148 other Mormon pioneers, had their first view of the Great Salt Lake Valley.This is the place, they said.I have multiple sets of grandparents who made this unimaginable trek. Across oceans, states and territories. Across the Great Plains and the daunting Rocky Mountains. Driving ox-drawn wagons through rushing rivers, endless prairies, steep mountain passes, and rocky, wheel-killing canyons. Enduring harsh winters with little food and too much sickness.&nbsp;
Spending 18 months of untold sacrifices to find their place of refuge.&nbsp;
I can’t imagine their daily hardships, so different from my relatively cushy 21st Century life, but I do try and imagine the joy and exhilaration they must have felt looking down on the valley stretching out before them. The culmination of their toils, and the beginning of their hopes and dreams.
I was not raised in the Mormon faith, but I’m proud of these brave and indomitable people...these ancestors of mine.
Along with their few belongings, and their belief in a better future, they have brought my cells, my genes, the building blocks of who I am, bouncing in a covered wagon across that Mormon Trail.<img width="2048" height="1265" width_o="2048" height_o="1265" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/e089833d84fb07b48b3e0461b3874c0c94055b6c22e929e532c8183c56724006/KathrynWagon.JPG" data-mid="66841918" border="0" data-scale="100" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/e089833d84fb07b48b3e0461b3874c0c94055b6c22e929e532c8183c56724006/KathrynWagon.JPG" />

	&nbsp;one tough cookie︎ Whenever I’m having a hard day, I think of this description of my Great Great Grandmother in the Daughters of Utah Pioneers Historical Register:
Mary Foster Windley&nbsp; 1836 - 1927
Becoming sick even before leaving Florence, Nebraska to cross the Plains, Mary was confined to bed in the wagon made on top of stoves. She was delirious most of the way as her hip bones tore through her skin and three small bones at the base of her spine decayed. Scarred for life, she perservered until she was able to walk again.
After their arrival in the Salt Lake Valley, she cared for her family in a tiny room with a straw bed in one corner, a dry goods box for a table and oilcloth bags stuffed with clothing to sit on. To help her family she made glue for Dinwoody Furniture by boiling hoofs and scrap hides.
Responding to a call to settle the Bear Lake Valley, Mary’s family was one of the original settlers of St. Charles, Idaho. Her second child, Charles, was the first child born in that settlement. There, they endured extreme winters with primitive shelter and little food. The first winter, she fed her family frozen potatoes and a little milk, thickened with frosted smutty wheat ground in a coffee mill.

&nbsp;︎unbroken&nbsp;

My grandmother’s health may have suffered from the trek out west, but her soup tureen brought from England survived the trip quite well.

	In the ground, under a forest of beautiful Quaking Aspens in central Utah, is one of the largest and oldest organisms in the WORLD.Its name is Pando – an enormous 106 acre grove of 47,000 genetically identical aspen trees, sharing one root system that originates from a single, 13 million pound, underground “parent”. I first became aware of Pando after perusing the annual alumni magazine from Utah State University. Researchers at my alma mater were studying this incredible “forest of one tree”.&nbsp; It exists in south-central Utah, not far from where my father would take us fishing. I had no idea it existed, this record-breaking ancient organism, and the oldest and largest tree on earth.How could I not be inspired by Pando? A living example of how seemingly separate beings are all interconnected with a shared DNA? Right up my alley of interest.

︎ you say potato...&nbsp;

My grandfather was a potato farmer in Idaho. I loved to visit the farm and play in the huge potato cellar. I couldn’t resist the similarity between pando and a sprouting potato, so I just went with it. I also added a few farmers to this piece in honor of my grandfather.

︎ the trembling giant&nbsp;

“Pando” is Latin for “I spread”. It has also been nicknamed “The Trembling Giant” for the shimmering effect of Quaking Aspen leaves in the breeze.
It was also designated the Utah State Tree in 2014.
The sad news is Pando may be dying.
After almost a million years of growth, Pando is shrinking due to environmental issues...mostly from years of elk and mule deer eating the new saplings. The Fishlake National Forest is working on fencing off areas to protect the world’s oldest tree.

There are more than three million differences between your genome and anyone else’s. On the other hand, we are all 99.9 percent the same, DNA-wise. (And we’ve all heard the news that we are about 99 percent the same as our closest relative, chimpanzees.)I loved this description from Genome News Network:
If the genome were a book, every person's book would contain the same paragraphs and chapters, arranged in the same order. Each book would tell more or less the same story. But my book might contain a typo on page 303 that yours lacks, and your book might use a British spelling on page 135—"colour"—where mine uses the American spelling—"color."

	Inspiration can come from many places:&nbsp; A dream, a passion, a fear, a joy. A scene, a person, a personal event, a world event. A color, a pattern, an object, a phrase.For this artwork, it came from a song. When I heard “In The Blood” by John Mayer, I thought ‘hmmm, there might be something here’.
Although I don’t share his worry that I’ve inherited a disfunctional approach to love, my creative ears did perk up at the synchronicity of our concepts:
How much of my mother has my mother left in me?&nbsp; How much of my father am I destined to become. Will it wash out in the water, or is it always in the blood?My mother’s parents came to the United States from Denmark, and can trace genetic links to the Viking era. Given the propensity for the Vikings to sail out and conquer new lands (aka raping and pillaging), I imagine there are many people with such genetic links. What causes some people to become explorers, to leave the comfort (or discomfort) of everything they know and embrace uncertainty and danger to seek something new? Why did my Grandparents leave the gorgeous seaside farmland of Illerisøre Denmark to take their chances in America?I read an interesting article about ADHD, an inheritable trait linked to creativity, and its role in history. Scientists have found that the farther a group’s ancestors migrated, the higher the prevalence of the gene variant in that population. It’s no surprise to me that I was diagnosed with this “disorder”. I struggle with it every day, but I am also graced by its benefits.On a sea of blood the Viking ships brought me a genetic dopamine variant. Across an ocean on a steamship, my grandparents brought me my curiosity...and a restless creative mind.

My mother grew up on a potato farm in Idaho. At a time when most women couldn’t expand their horizons beyond being a wife and mother, her curiosity led her to become a stewardess in the newly blossoming airline industry of the 1940s. She loved traveling to new places and learning new things. She also loved to create. Sitting by her side, crafting and painting and decorating, are some of my fondest memories.

︎ the longship&nbsp;
Norse sagas have described the Viking longship in detail: the square red &amp; white sails (the colors of blood and bone) made from woven wool, and prow heads carved in the likenesses of fearsome beasts.

	︎ in the blood&nbsp; &nbsp;
~John Mayer
How much of my mother has my mother left in me?How much of my love will be insane to some degree?And what about this feeling that I'm never good enough?Will it wash out in the water, or is it always in the blood?
How much of my father am I destined to become?Will I dim the lights inside me just to satisfy someone?Will I let this woman kill me, or do away with jealous love?Will it wash out in the water, or is it always in the blood?I can feel love the I want, I can feel the love I needBut it's never gonna come the way I amCould I change it if I wanted, can I rise above the flood?Will it wash out in the water, or is it always in the blood?How much like my brothers, do my brothers wanna be?Does a broken home become another broken family?Or will we be there for each other, like nobody ever could?Will it wash out in the water, or is it always in the blood?I can feel love the I want, I can feel the love I needBut it's never gonna come the way I amCould I change it if I wanted, could I rise above the flood?Will it wash out in the water, or is it always in the blood?
